Who is St Valentine?
There are many different theories that have been contested in regards to who St Valentine actually is, however the core fact that is universally agreed upon is that he was martyred and buried on February 14th in Via Flaminia’s Roman Cemetery. The key confusion about St Valentine is whether it is about one saint or two conflated saints with the same name, therefore there are many different legends.
One of the most popular legends of St Valentine’s is that he was a priest whom was arrested for secretly marrying Christian couples in Rome. These couples were being persecuted by Emperor Claudius in the third century AD. After attempting to convert the Emperor to christianity during his time in jail, he was condemned to death. At the same time it was also said that he fell in love with the jailer's daughter and on the day of his execution - February 14th - he sent her a goodbye love letter signed ‘Your Valentine’.
King Henry VII officially declared the 14th to be the holiday of St Valentine’s Day in 1537!
Our Cocktail Love List
So now we know why we celebrate Valentine’s Day lets get some drinks in! We’ve created our very own Cocktail Love List with a range of different drinks to get you in the mood...
I Luv Lucy
The first cocktail of our Love List was introduced by Michel Dozoia from Névé Luxury Ice in Los Angeles. Michel explained his inspiration behind the cocktail “I made this drink for this beautiful woman, she loved it, and later became my girlfriend. So I named it after her.” - how lovely!
Combine into a cocktail shaker the Whisky, Vermouth, lemon juice, sugar syrup and egg white, shake without ice at first to emulsify the egg. Next add the ice and shake until cold and strain into a sour glass. For the extra love add two drops of bitter, and using a straw draw the bitters into a heart on the top.
A Pink Champagne
A Valentine’s classic, this cocktail will leave you bubbly and in the mood for romance.
Pink Champagne (we reccommend - Laurent-Perrier Cuvee Rosé) French Brandy One sugar cube Angostura bitters
In the bottom of a champagne flute, soak the sugar cube with a few splashes of Angostura bitters then add the french brandy and top with pink Champagne… Beautiful!
A beautifully simple yet sophisticated drink for your rum lover:
We asked you and followers of our social channels what their favourite occasion was to drink Champagne and the results are in… it seems that almost any occasion experienced and shared with our nearest and dearest makes it champagne-worthy.
